Before we left Kokomo and headed south on our favourite I19 heading to Indianapolis, we drove through a little tiny coffee shop – seriously you couldn’t fit more than one person in that coffee shack – and wandered just a little more through the town. Luckily we did or we would have missed this HUGE statue of a bug on the street corner. There is still much debate as to whether this bug was a grasshopper or a praying mantis, but we’re pretty certain Warren is wrong… 🙂
We didn’t spend too much time as we were quite eager to get to Indianapolis. It did not disappoint. The Soldiers & Sailors monument in the downtown that the city has grown around? It is beautiful. The downtown was full of people, tourists like us, taking in the sights. Many people were sitting and chatting around the monument, many more were wandering around the square and window shopping or riding in horse drawn carriages. It was a very busy place. Later we realized that there was also some sort of sporting event going on, which may have been one of the things contributing to the number of people wandering around. We are going back tomorrow – which is Sunday – so maybe it won’t be quite so crowded.
After a thorough tour we headed out to the Indianapolis Speedway. It was amazing to come down 16th st and see the water tower and grandstands which neither of us had seen before in person, but were so very familiar nonetheless from following the race on tv. It was late in the day so the speedway wasn’t open, but we are heading back tomorrow to go to the museum and get some souvenirs
It was once again a really great day – we are indeed having a very good road trip.
